Today and this weekend we remember U.S. Army Brigadier General Hazel Winifred Johnson-Brown (October 10, 1927 – August 5, 2011). BG Johnson-Brown served in Korea and Vietnam and in 1979 she became the first black female general in the United States Army and the first black chief of the United States Army Nurse Corps.

Johnson-Brown joined the Army in 1955, shortly after President Harry Truman banned segregation and discrimination in the armed services. She was a staff nurse in Japan and Chief nurse in Korea and also served as the Director of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing. BG Johnson-Brown passed away on this day in 2011, at the age of 82, and now rests in section 60.
